Top 5 worst games of this generation (that are successful)

In gaming, there will always be a best and a worst. This rant is not for the kind of bad game that gets insanely low reviews and sells 100 copies total. You all know not to buy those games. This list is for bad games that have suceeded in both the review and sales area as well as the respect of most gamers. This list will be controversial and many will argue with it, but ultimately its the truth so lets just pull the band aid off and get to it.

5. Duke Nukem Forever.

What more can you say about a game that has been hyped for 14 years? Fans hoped that this would be a winner and thier nostalgic dreams of the 90s would be reborn once again, but the completely unorganized development of this game ensured that it would be terrible from the start. Even with the obvious signs that this game would bomb, the old school gamers still defend this game despite the archiac controls, out dated graphics, and long load times that plague it. Duke Nukem is a painful reminder that nostalgia is only good if it stays in the past because if it is remade for your more complex adult brain, you will realize that the only reason you liked it in the first place was because you were just easier to impress when you were 12.

4.Metroid Other M.

This is not a game I would ever expect to be on a list like this. The Metroid Prime series was pretty much the best 3D transition Nintendo ever made with their series. Metroid Other M promised to mix the 2D and 3D elements we have come to love and for the most part they did that right. What they got wrong was the recharacterization of Samus. Samus has changed from a fearless bounty hunter who takes orders from no one to a submissive weakling. Samus now cowers in fear over enemies she has killed multiple times and takes orders from some dude who has no authority over her. This is the equivalent of making Rambo wear a tutu. Its embarassing to watch and soils the good name of the first real video game heroine. As good as the gameplay may be, the presentation is a deal breaker.

3.Bayonetta.

If you are looking for a game to prove to your parents that video games can be a mature and classy medium of entertainment, you are about as cold as the south pole. Bayonetta is the quintessential example of using sex to sell a game. You play as a woman with extremely long legs who constantly walks with a model pose and strips off her hair clothing when she fights while the camera zooms in to get the best angles of this. Did I mention this game is japanese? There is no coherent story or innovative gameplay here. This is all a visual spectactle for the gamers who are lonely enough to use this game as...aid. There is no class, no shame, and no subtley to Bayonetta at all. Bayonetta has only served to push the argument that games are just violent, sex crazed, and misogynistic when we were finally starting to shake off that image. Now that image will be stuck with us for many years to come.

2.Saints Row.
There have been GTA clones before it, but none of them are as shameless in thier cloning as Saints Row is. Saints Row is Grand Theft Auto in almost every way. Whatever its done, GTA has done before and better. The graphics are bland, the story is immature and nonsensical, and the gameplay is buggy to the point of nearly being unplayable. Saints Row is the original game for being unoriginal and has set a new low in the gaming industry for just how much you can steal from a sucessful game and get away with it. The industry has become full of uninnovative clones and Saints Row made it all completely acceptable with its success.

1.Wii Fit.
Here is a game I can barely even call a game. Wii Fit is more like what you would get out of a bad infomercial. You stand on a board and do some aerobics and this is supposed to make you fit? Not by a long shot. Nintendo Execs have even flat out said that the game is not supposed to make you fit at all. So what is the point of this game? To exploit the insecurities of our more rounded gamers? I thought games were supposed to help you escape the realities of everyday life, but this game takes life, throws it in your face, and calls you fat while doing it. Its like buying Portal 2...without the portals...just glados calling you fatty the whole time...and we pay for this.

Honorable mention: Beatles Rock Band.
The Beatles were the greatest band to grace modern music, but thier low tempo music does not make for a fun rhythm game at all. All the songs make you hit a button about once every 5 seconds (and this is on expert) guaranteeing fast boredom for even the most unskilled player. If you really want to rock out, GH Metallica is the way to go.

***All the songs make you hit a button about once every 5 seconds (and this is on expert) guaranteeing fast boredom for even the most unskilled player.***

Hyperbole at its worst.

Slayer OP5308d ago

Not really. The Beatles were not skilled in instuments at all. The magic came from writing simple melodies and putting really powerful lyrics over them. This works great for songs but for a game its just boring. Every song on expert can be 5 starred on its first try even if you suck at rhythm games. Even as a player who has beaten the hardest songs rhythm games has to offer, I would not say im being biased on this at all. The Beatles Rock Band is just too painfully easy. A rhythm game with no challenge is no game at all.

coolbeans5307d ago

You to need to account for the singing though. Whether you know the songs or not, there's a real challenge in that aspect of Beatles: Rock Band.

Christopher5307d ago (Edited 5307d ago )

***Every song on expert can be 5 starred on its first try even if you suck at rhythm games. ****

Sorry, but you're completely talking out of your arse.

While Beatles Rock Band isn't as hard as many of the songs on standard RB, they are just not that easy. And, they're not supposed to be as hard, they're supposed to be the Beatles! Hell, people don't buy most songs because they're hard, they buy them because they like the music!

Example: Find me someone who sucks at rhythm games who can 5 star The End guitar on expert on the first try. The shortest song out there, but that solo section isn't going to be mastered on the first try through except by the most expert of expert guitar gamers.

Hell, just find me someone who can expert Back in the USSR on drums first time...

If you haven't gotten my point, you may be really good at rhythm games, but there's no way you can logically say that the Beatles Rock Band is as easy as you claim. And then you complain about it even though it's not a game for selling the difficult, of which there is some, but for the songs.

Essentially, you're doing it all wrong.

Slayer OP5307d ago (Edited 5307d ago )

"And, they're not supposed to be as hard, they're supposed to be the Beatles!"

That is the problem here. Rhythm games are not about listening to good music, that is just the icing on the cake. The actual cake part comes from a challenge. It comes from the feeling you get when you finally are able to play on expert after practicing for weeks from the ground up on easy mode. Its about climbing mountains and breaking barriers to finally build up enough skill to beat Jordan or Through the Fire and Flames on expert. Have you ever done that? If you havent, then you probably have no idea what im talking about when I say that feeling of triumph is second to none. Rhythm games started out Hardcore and were more about skill than musical catalogs back before that series took off and began to be dictated by hipsters. Slowly, Rhythm games started to become hideously casual to the point where the challenge was gone. Beatles Rock Band is the epitome of that movement that has not only hurt rhythm games, but the gaming industry as a whole. Games are too simple now and because of that, they are unrewarding and become shelved right after they are easily beaten. A more ideal band that would have satisfied all the needs of a rhythm game would have been Rolling Stones or dare I say, Led Zeppelin? Oh no now im taking my dream too far.

Christopher5307d ago

***That is the problem here. Rhythm games are not about listening to good music, that is just the icing on the cake.***

No, that's what it means for you. I don't play songs I don't like. It's the first thing I consider.

I'm far from the only rhythm game player that does it this way. Far from.

Slayer OP5307d ago

I think its best to agree to disagree at this point. We see things through 2 different lenses on this issue and I repect that enough to realize we are just going in circles here.

Not to mention, you can outbubble me :O

Bayonetta was praised by critics and hack and slash fans it was a great game developed by devil may cry creator with over the top bosses with great fighting mechanics , you couldn't take it that the lead character was a female that could take care of her own and made men in the game look like weaklings and if in real life wud kick your ass. Pretty much fail there u havent played the game and probably jealous you couldnt buy it because your mum didnt buy it for you thinking its porn . Or you are guilty of wanking over it. Doa xtreme volleyball is using sex to sell , whereas if you think bayonetta used sex to sell you fail and your pathetic. Bayonetta was basically a female dante . Cheeky over the top and flamboyent show off. Bayonnetta is one of the best hack & slash gamd this gen along with GoW3

DeeZee5307d ago

Bayonetta? That game was critically praised across the board (Meatacritic: PS3 87, 360 90). If you can look pass all the sexual stuff you'd find an enjoyable game underneath.

e-p-ayeaH5307d ago (Edited 5307d ago )

same goes for duke in my opinion but oh well there´s haters everywhere.

Slayer OP5307d ago

"That game was critically praised across the board (Meatacritic: PS3 87, 360 90)."
All of my games have been praised critically. Thats why they are here.

Gameplay is only one part of the puzzle. The next and most important part is presentation and that is where Bayonetta falls apart. You are asking me to ignore the sexual part of bayonetta but that is like asking me to ignore the paint of the painting.

Tony P5306d ago

How is presentation the "most important part" of a game? And gameplay isn't?

...That's as bad as being a graphics whore.

Slayer OP5305d ago

If a game presents itself badly, no amount of good gameplay can save it. Imagine a game with the best gameplay ever that revolved around a character who raped and cannibalised children. Would you consider that a good game?

Tony P5303d ago (Edited 5303d ago )

Haha.

You're 100% wrong and probably don't even realize it.

Take some time to research, and you'll see. What you see as paramount is at best an advertising campaign and at worst entirely superficial.

fossilfern5307d ago

Duke Nukem? Metroid Other M & Bayonetta ?!!!!!! You cant be serious about Bayonetta its one of my highlights of the generation it has the best combat system I have ever seen!

Rage_S905306d ago

Couldn't agree more with this list although i would also add assassins creed

I hope the Switch 1 reaches 160M+ before production stops. 😅

There was a worldwide chip shortage when PS5 released so not an apples to apples comparison.

Christopher55m ago(Edited 54m ago)

Pretty sure Japan had plenty of PS5 on the shelves to buy no matter what. The fact is, Japan has moved to mobile gaming over standard home console. Software sales alone show that.
